I'd likely lean towards yes with this example — defining the parameters of Blackness is something I'd like to avoid as much as is reasonable, and since being familiar with every canon nominated will more or less impossible, I'd much rather be inclusive than reject a character who was nominated in good faith and may have been admitted if I'd had time to read the entire series (or if I had different but equally valid cultural readings, et cetera).
